Another shrewd, and dare I say, PROFOUND column. Thanks yet again.
When it comes to "spirituality" and our human need to appeal to forces beyond our reckoning, I try to be sympathetic. For whatever reason, though, the institutional expressions of "faith" turn into reactionary intolerance or worse. I too feel the tug of existential questions that taunt us all in their unfathomibility. But for whatever reason, "God" inevitably curdles into a panacea that always comes tainted with a tinge of hemlock, poisoning many of our countrymen into a fever of MAGA/ Hegseth tribalism and brutish menace.
I used to think the USA was better than this. We're NOT better than this. The USA is now a quaking, rattling truckload of nitroglycerin, lurching forward on a rotting rope bridge with a boiling river of muddy chaos roaring beneath. I remember again grimly the "Year Zero" Cambodian Khmer Rouge butchers of 1975, attempting to murder their way into Utopia. Somehow that NEVER works, does it?!?! Is this really where we want humanity to go?
"Democracy" is predicated on an informed & engaged citizenry that can make decisions based on our common good & not on a spiteful plurality of rage-addled voters determined to cast their ballots as an act of hatred. America will fall, terminally sickened by our own degeneracy and the consequential Jesus-cult rationalization for bloodlust. I can't help but recall the door-slam finale of Bride of Frankenstein, "We Belong Dead."
OK, allow me to disengage here, BUT your gravitas and life experience just spark me to attempt to reply as a means to focus my own thoughts AND to again salute your powerful life experience & BLAZING expression of our shared danger amidst the heaving chaos of our "New Golden Age". THANKS once more.
Insightful, exceptional writing.
Clear articulation of what most of us are feeling — thank you for putting it into words
